The forthcoming Lizzie McGuire Disney Plus show may be stuck in development hell, but the spirit of the early 2000s Disney Channel original series lives on. Hilary Duff, Lizzie herself, and Jake Thomas, who played Lizzie’s younger brother, gathered the full cast of the show over a Zoom call, reuniting them for the first time in almost 18 years.

The cast — joined by writers Jeremy Bargiel and Nina Bargiel — did a table read of “Between a Rock and a Bra Place!” aka the episode where Lizzie and Miranda go bra shopping with Lizzie’s mother. Nina Bargiel revealed some behind the scenes details about the episode, including the fact that they weren’t even sure if they could talk about bras on the Disney Channel. They were told by the network they had to juxtapose it with a boy-focused plot and also they could only say the word twice and never show a bra on-screen.

After doing a rendition of the theme song, the actors proceed with the full table read — complete with Lizzie’s cartoon self popping up when appropriate.

The Lizzie McGuire Disney Plus show was supposed to follow Lizzie into her early-30s as an interior decorator in New York City. The project was put on halt after showrunner Terri Minsky abruptly departed. Duff and Minsky allegedly wanted to do a show with more mature themes geared towards the audience who grew up with Lizzie, not necessarily the current Disney Channel demographic. After production stopped, Duff posted a screencap of the announcement that Love, Simon would be moving to Hulu because Disney had deemed it “not family-friendly” and circled the phrase, writing “sounds familiar.”

We might not have Lizzie in her 30s dealing with student loans, job insecurity, and dating, but we do have this Instagram video. Maybe the House of Mouse will catch on and realize there are plenty of adults out there eager to catch up with Lizzie.

The original Lizzie McGuire series is available on Disney Plus.
