At least one former professional skateboarder says he’s been approached about a new video game in the Skate series. Jason Dill leaked the information during a recent episode of the podcast The Nine Club, which was first reported by Wccftech.
“I got a call from the EA people about 10 months ago,” Dill said. “And they said ‘Hey, we want to talk about the Skate game.’ I said, oh fine, that’s fine ... [They] said, basically, ‘Hey Jason, we want to do a mobile version of Skate 3.’ And I wrote back, and I said, ‘What else?’ She wrote back, ‘No, that’s it.’”
The original Skate came out in 2007 for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 and was positioned as EA’s answer to the Tony Hawk series. There was also a streamlined version for mobile phones. The series is known for its unique “flick it” control system, as well as an excellent physics model. Fans of the Skate series have been pining for a new entry in the franchise since the release of Skate 3 in 2010. The studio behind it, EA Black Box (originally Black Box Games), has since been shut down.
The entire situation has long rubbed Skate fans the wrong way and, apparently, Dill is among them. From the podcast:
So I wrote back, ‘Look. No big deal. No one wants your stupid mobile version of Skate 3. Make Skate fucking 4 already. Just do it. Just make the game and just participate again. You can’t level it to the same numbers you get on other games. You do it for a cultural thing that pays you back later. And that’s how corporations fucking can work if they play their cards right. And she wrote me back and said, basically, ‘No. We’re not going to do that.’
So I wrote her back, and I said, ‘Well, have a lot of luck on Need For Speed 29. I won’t be in your stupid mobile game [...]’ I think it’s fucking dumb.
Word that publisher EA might have abandoned the Skate trademark in November got the rumor mill firing on all cylinders, but ultimately amounted to very little. Now Dill says the publisher was recruiting talent sometime last summer.
