The trailer for coming-of-age drama Babyteeth features a mustachioed Ben Mendelsohn

The film is adapted from Rita Kalnejais’ stage play of the same name

After competing at the 76th Venice International Film Festival and the 2019 BFI London Film Festival, Shannon Murphy’s directorial debut, Babyteeth, is finally coming to theaters (hopefully) and VOD.

The film, based on the stage play of the same name by Rita Kalnejais, stars Sharp Objects’ Eliza Scanlen as Milla, a seriously ill young teenager who falls in love with Moses (Toby Wallace), a drug dealer. The burgeoning relationship is cause for concern for Milla’s parents, Henry (Ben Mendelsohn) and Anna (Essie Davis), who don’t approve of Moses or the influence he seems to be having on their daughter.

The movie’s first trailer, which reveals a mustachioed Mendelsohn at his dad-ly best, shows Moses and Milla’s first meeting. He asks her for some money at a train station, then refuses what she offers him because it’s too much. She offers a compromise, then: He can have all the money if he’ll cut her hair. The wild mop that remains is the first red flag for Milla’s parents.

Babyteeth is set to be released in theaters and on VOD on June 19.
