Insomniac Games has a new Ratchet & Clank game on the way, and it’s coming to PlayStation 5. Sony Interactive Entertainment and Insomniac announced Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart during the PS5 reveal event on Thursday, confirming that the next entry in the franchise will launch on the next-gen PlayStation.
A teaser trailer showed Ratchet and Clank being transported through multiple dimensions, with full detailed game worlds loading in instantly (no doubt a showcase for the PS5’s SSD and IO architecture), and the pair riding a variety of creatures. The teaser trailer also teased a new mysterious Lombax. Insomniac Games showed off first Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart gameplay, including a variety of wacky weapons — with one that appeared to turn enemies into topiaries.
The most recent entry in the series, simply titled Ratchet & Clank, was released on PlayStation 4 in 2016, in tandem with an animated feature film of the same name. The PS4 entry was “a full-on, Hollywood-style remake of the 14-year-old original game,” Polygon said in our review of Ratchet & Clank.
The Ratchet & Clank franchise kicked off in 2002 with the PlayStation 2 game Ratchet & Clank. Insomniac Games has since delivered 10 sequels and spinoffs. The developer’s most recent PlayStation game, Marvel’s Spider-Man, was a bestseller on PS4, with more than 13 million copies sold. Sony acquired Insomniac Games in 2019.
