After romancing each other in the biopic Sergio, Narcos’ Wagner Moura and Knives Out’s Ana de Armas have been cast opposite each other once again in Olivier Assayas’ The Wasp Network.
In a departure from Assayas’ less action-oriented recent films (The Clouds of Sils Maria, Personal Shopper, Non-Fiction), the new thriller centers around René Gonzalez (Édgar Ramírez), a Cuban pilot who leaves his wife (Penélope Cruz) and daughter in Havana to defect to the United States. In secret, however, he works with an undercover operative (Gaël García Bernal) to spy for and support Fidel Castro. Moura and de Armas star as two of the other defectors in the group, known collectively as “the Wasp Network.”
The film, which takes place in the early ’90s, is based on the true story of The Cuban Five, and draws from Fernando Morais’ book The Last Soldiers of the Cold War.
The Wasp Network will debut on Netflix on June 19.
