Sony revealed the PlayStation 5’s design on Thursday, and reaction to the curvy black-and-white console has been mixed. What is less black and white is just how big the PS5 is going to be; Sony didn’t release official dimensions for its next-gen console, driving fans to speculate about its size based on limited information.

We’ve reached out to Sony for official dimensions of the PS5 and await its response. But unofficial findings point to a very large console, one that’s taller in stature (or wider, depending on the system’s orientation) than its direct competitor, the Xbox Series X, and bigger than the beefy PlayStation 3.

To determine unofficial sizing, people are using the size of the USB port and optical disc drive slots on a variety of consoles. One of the most straightforward comparisons comes from Adam Fairclough of HDTVtest on Twitter. Fairclough shows his findings with both current and next-gen consoles (Xbox One X, Xbox Series X, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, PlayStation 4 Pro).

A more robust comparison graphic created by Reddit user GREBO7 illustrates how the PS5 will likely compare in size to previous-generation consoles, including the famously massive PlayStation 3:

Some fans have extrapolated their own dimensions, based on existing consoles. In a graphic posted to Resetera, fans’ estimates point to the PlayStation 5 standing about 15 inches tall when oriented vertically, not including the stand. For comparison, the Xbox Series X stands 11.85 inches high, according to a report from Digital Foundry. The original PlayStation 4 stands 10.4 inches high and the PS4 Pro stands 11.6 inches high.

Width-wise, the PS5 appears to come in at 3.5 inches at its widest points, based on unofficial data, when the console is oriented vertically.

The PlayStation 5 is slated to launch this holiday season.
