Tetris Effect is coming to Xbox, now with multiplayer

An expansion for other versions will come later

Tetris Effect is coming to Xbox, developer Enhance Games announced Thursday during the Xbox Games Showcase. The game will be available on Xbox One and Xbox Series X with Smart Delivery, and via Xbox Game Pass, this holiday season when Microsoft’s next-gen console launches. The new version is called Tetris Effect: Connected, and it’s bringing a multiplayer experience to the mind-bending puzzle game alongside the whole single-player campaign.

The new Connected content will remain exclusive to Xbox for months. In summer 2021, an expansion for Tetris Effect will bring the multiplayer mode, as a free update, to PlayStation 4, Windows PC via Epic Games Store, and the Oculus Quest. Players will be able to participate in new modes, like Zone Battle, which “shakes up traditional 1-on-1 Tetris gameplay via the time-stopping Zone mechanic made famous in Tetris Effect,” according to a news release. In the Connected mode, up to three players can play together “as one” in a single, connected Tetris playfield with “increasingly-challenging CPU-controlled bosses.”

Cross-play will be available between all Xbox platforms.

Tetris Effect was originally released in 2018 for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation VR. It’s an iteration on the original Tetris, which is, essentially, a test of fitting brightly-colored blocks into tight spaces. Tetris Effect keeps this principal, but wildly changes the aesthetic with flashy, euphoric visuals and sounds. We think it’s “the best Tetris game since the original” and one of the best games of 2018.

In 2019, Enhance Games and the Tetris Co. announced a Windows PC version of the game — “the ultimate version” with “expanded game and graphical options.”
