The list of things we know for sure about the second Sonic The Hedgehog movie is pretty much limited to the fact we know it’s happening. But on Friday morning, Universal gave us a new piece of information about the tiny blue speed demon’s second theatrical outing: its release date. Turns out, Sonic will dash back into theaters for his sequel on April 8, 2022.
If that sounds like a long time from now ... it definitely is. The prospect of releasing new movies in theaters this year is getting more and more bleak, and that means studios have to look a whole lot further into the future than they might normally. Just about every blockbuster on the calendar has been pushed back at least a year, so studios need to claim their ground now for the years to come. Which is why we now know Sonic’s release date two years in advance.
Of course, we still don’t know anything about the actual plot of Sonic 2, but based on the end of the first movie it’s probably safe to assume that Dr. Robotnik will be back, along with some more of Sonic’s friends from the video games.
Sonic wasn’t the only movie that Universal discussed in its Friday news release. A Quiet Place Part 2 is now slated for April 23, 2021, instead of Sept. 4, 2020. Top Gun Maverick — a ranking member of the will-this-movie-ever-actually-get-released club — is moving from Dec. 23, 2020 to July 2, 2021. The Jackass reboot/sequel/revival moved back a few months from July 2, 2021, to Sept. 3.
