Pokémon Go artwork teases Gen 6 starters

Is the Kalos region imminent?

The next generation of Pokémon from the Kalos region are being teased in a new piece of artwork released today for Pokémon Go. To celebrate the game’s fourth anniversary (and hype up Pokémon Go Fest later this month), a new illustration highlights the game’s trainers, Team Rocket, and a variety of Pokémon, including Gen 6 starters Chespin, Fennekin, and Froakie.

The artwork also highlights a few Pokémon that aren’t available in Pokémon Go just yet — including Victini, Whimsicott, and Mega Evolutions of Lucario, Charizard, and Mewtwo — but have been either announced or teased.

Pokémon Go developer Niantic is still in the midst of adding Pokémon from the Unova region, but don’t expect Gen 5 to be complete any time soon — especially since players are still waiting on some Gen 4 Pokémon to arrive in Pokémon Go. And with a few Galar region Pokémon already in the mobile game, it’s clear Niantic and The Pokémon Company aren’t strict about adhering to completing each generation of the Pokédex before moving on.

Niantic offered a similar tease last year for the game’s third anniversary. Back in June 2019, artwork featuring Tepig, Snivy, and Oshawott heralded the arrival of Unova region Pokémon. Those Pokémon ultimately arrived in Pokémon Go in September 2019.

It’s likely we’ll hear more as we get closer to Pokémon Go Fest 2020, which will take place July 25-26 in online form.
