Control’s Ultimate Edition to include free upgrade to Series X and PS5 ports, current owners not included

The Ultimate Edition will also include all of the game’s updates and expansions

Control’s second expansion is due to be released soon, and the game is getting an Ultimate Edition to celebrate. The Ultimate Edition will come with all the updates and content for the game so far, including both expansions, and it will also be sold on Steam, a first for this game. But it will include a bonus as well.

Anyone who buys Control Ultimate Edition will get a free upgrade to the next-gen version of the game when it comes out later this year. According to the Control website, the free copy of the game will be a “digital upgrade” to the next-gen version for players that buy the Ultimate Edition on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One. Players who already own the original version of the game won’t be eligible for the free upgrade.

This is important due to the release date of each version of the game, shown below:

  • August 27th Steam
  • September 10th Epic Game Store, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One (digital)
  • End of 2020 PlayStation 4 and Xbox One (physical edition)
  • End of 2020 PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X (digital)
  • Early 2021 PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X (physical)

Anyone who wants to play the game on the latest consoles, but wouldn’t mind getting started on the current-generation release on Sept. 10, can pick up the game knowing they’ll also get the upgrade. We’ve reached out to Remedy and 505 Games to ask if players can only move from PlayStation 4 to PlayStation 5 or Xbox One to Xbox Series X, or if the upgrade will be available across consoles if you only a PlayStation 4 and will be picking up an Xbox Series X, and we’ll update the post if we hear back.

The Ultimate Edition comes with the full base game; Control’s first expansion, The Foundation; the Alan Wake-themed second expansion, AWE; as well as the endgame mode The Expeditions, Photo Mode, and all of the other content updates that have been released since the game’s launch in August 2019.
