Bugsnax is more than a catchy tune — here’s its first gameplay trailer

Kinda bugs and kinda snacks

Octodad: Dadliest Catch developer Young Horses debuted a gameplay trailer for its impossibly cute upcoming game, Bugsnax, on Thursday. Turns out, there’s more to the game than simply a catchy tune — it sounds like you’ll play a rogue journalist checking out the mysterious and food-filled world. It’s our first extended look at the game since it was announced on June 11.

Bugsnax’s new trailer begins with an open invitation from Elizabert Megafig, an explorer, to join her on Snaktooth Island. The journalist takes her up on the offer — against the wishes of her news editor boss — and heads over to the island. In the gameplay trailer, you’re greeted by the mayor, and that’s where we get our first look at the gameplay. First, you catch a strawberry Bugsnax with a trap. Next, you lure one into a pen with some ketchup.

Throughout the trailer, there seems to be more inventive ways to catch Bugsnax — with the overall goal of bringing folks back to Snaxburg. In between trapping expeditions, you’ll also have to help the island settlers with their “personal drama” and “Bugsnax related problems,” according to a news release.

When the game is released on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Windows PC this year, Bugsnax will be stuffed with 100 different species of kinda-bugs and kinda-snacks, including a donut with sprinkle legs and iconic strawberry with googly eyes.

The next level of puzzles.
