A Game of Space takes the best parts of Elite: Dangerous into virtual reality

What if mining was the game?

AGOS: A Game of Space, announced today during the pre-amble to the Ubisoft Forward streaming event, is a brand new spacefaring game custom built for virtual reality. You can view the entire two-minute trailer above, and on YouTube. The game will launch Oct. 28 for HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, and Valve Index devices.

“Players will become the AI operating the last ship to leave a condemned Earth,” Ubisoft said Thursday in a news release, “guiding a group of survivors across eight unique stellar systems to find a new home.”

Set in the year 2057, the game posits a future where humanity has been forced to leave its birthplace in search of new horizons. Oddly enough, players aren’t part of the vanguard. In fact, they’re the last ones left turning off the lights, as it were. It’s the equivalent of burning the ships at Troy. There’s no going back, it seems, and the only way is forward.

The tool that players have available to them are small, twin-engined probes. Using Apollo-style thrusters to change their attitude in space, players are tasked with gathering resources to keep their crews fed and watered along the way. Probes can be heavily modified, and the game showed off a number of different mining and repair scenarios.

The trailer feels at a glance like some of the best part of Elite: Dangerous. Players will need to dig deep into spinning rocks, carefully maneuver through the outstretched habitation arms of massive starships, and dock themselves inside tiny ports.
