BioMutant — remember that? — gets a launch date for PS4, Xbox One

BioMutant finally has a launch date. THQ Nordic’s “open-world, post-apocalyptic kung fu fable” arrives May 25, 2021 on PlayStation 4, Windows PC, and Xbox One.

Originally due in 2018, BioMutant is developed by Experiment 101, which Avalanche Studios’ former creative director, Stefan Ljungqvist, founded in 2015. THQ Nordic is the game’s publisher. In BioMutant, players can modify their character with bionic prosthetics, powerful mutations, and cool weapons, all of which amp up the game’s martial arts combat system.

We got a hands-on look at BioMutant at PAX West in 2018, right around the time Experiment 101’s official website for the game went quiet. (It returned with a brief launch announcement on Tuesday.) The player-designed protagonist character will take on a blend of animal features according to the attributes users give them. In BioMutant’s world, the characters aren’t only adorable-looking critters; they’re actually the scarred survivors of a post-apocalyptic world.

“It feels great to slide through a large enemy’s legs and catch them unaware from behind with a devastating combo,” Mike Futter wrote for Polygon in 2018. “Each weapon has its own play style and a unique ‘super wushu’ attack that can be charged over time.”

Although playable on Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 through backward compatibility, BioMutant does not have a version or enhancements planned for the new generation of consoles.
