The excellent remake of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater and its sequel came out on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Windows PC last year, but the game is heading to a few new platforms soon. On Monday, the skateboarding legend himself tweeted a few cryptic messages about new versions of the Pro Skater remake in the near future, and on Tuesday, Activision officially announced that the game is coming to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X.
Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 and 2 is scheduled to launch March 26 on PS5 and Xbox Series X. Meanwhile, the Switch version of the game is set to arrive on June 25.
Hawk’s original tweets were mostly centered around Activision’s upcoming release of Crash Bandicoot 4 on Switch. Hawk said he was jealous of Crash’s new platform and appealed for a little help from the orange bandicoot to get Pro Skater 1 and 2 on new platforms as well. Hawk’s tweet got replies from all kinds of brand accounts, including the Crash Bandicoot account, Activision, and even Nintendo of America, despite the fact that the new versions of the game hadn’t been announced quite yet. This was clearly part of the marketing campaign building to the official announcement.
Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 and 2 will be the first Tony Hawk game released on Switch. As for the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions of the game, they will include plenty of graphical updates, such as the ability to play at 120 frames per second in 1080p resolution or at 60 fps in native 4K. (On Xbox Series S, the game will run at 60 fps in 1440p resolution.) Other improvements include “sharper dynamic shadows, reflections and lens flares, as well as enhanced skater textures,” Activision said in a news release.
People who own the remake digitally on PS4 or Xbox One will be able to upgrade to the PS5 or Xbox Series X version for $10. Those who own the Digital Deluxe Edition of the game — which already cost an extra $10 — will get the upgrade for free. (Paying the $10 upgrade fee will also get you the add-ons included in the Digital Deluxe Edition.) Strangely, customers who have a physical copy of the game on PS4 or Xbox One will be able to upgrade only on PlayStation, not Xbox, according to the FAQ on Activision’s support site.
Players will be able to carry their career progress and save data with them when upgrading. The syncing process will be automatic on Xbox, but PS4 players will have to manually upload save data to the cloud from within the game and then download it on PS5. In addition, Create-A-Park data will carry forward only on Xbox, not PlayStation.
Asked about the developer that is handling these ports, Activision told Polygon that original developer Vicarious Visions is on the case, even though Activision Blizzard recently merged the studio into Blizzard Entertainment.
