The next game in the Life is Strange series is coming this September, and will star an all-new protagonist with all-new powers. And unlike previous entries in the series, Life is Strange: True Colors won’t be episodic — the full story will be released all at once on Sept. 10.
Publisher Square Enix and developer Deck Nine Games, the team behind 2017’s Life is Strange: Before the Storm, revealed True Colors on Thursday during the Square Enix Presents digital showcase. Their new game game stars Alex Chen, a young Asian American woman who moves to the fictional Colorado town of Haven Springs to reunite with her brother Gabe. Alex possess supernatural powers in the form of psychic Empathy. She can both read and manipulate the strong emotions of others, which she perceives as colorful auras — but intense emotions can overwhelm Alex, as seen in the game’s debut trailer.
Alex will use her abilities to uncover the truth behind an unfolding mystery: the death of her brother, which is described as a “senseless tragic accident,” but seems to be anything but, based on True Colors’ trailer. Players will uncover the mystery of Gabe’s death by interacting with a deep cast of characters — two of them, Ryan and Steph, will play an important role in her journey as possible romantic interests for Alex. (Life is Strange fans will recognize Steph from Before the Storm.)
Bringing Alex to life is actor Erika Mori, who both voiced and performance-captured the character. Bolstering that performance is the artist known as mxmtoon, the musician and social media star (and occasional Among Us streamer) whose cover of Radiohead’s “Creep” played during Thursday’s reveal video. mxmtoon will perform Alex’s singing voice. Other musicians appearing on the game’s soundtrack, a mixed of new and licensed songs, include Novo Amor, Phoebe Bridgers, and Gabrielle Aplin.
Life is Strange: True Colors is slated for release on Google Stadia, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X on Sept. 10. True Colors will be available in a Deluxe Edition, which features an exclusive story called Wavelengths starring Steph, and an Ultimate Edition, which will include remastered versions of the original Life is Strange and Life is Strange: Before the Storm.
