Mass Effect Legendary Edition supports a frame rate of up to 120 frames per second on Xbox Series X, and 60 fps at 4K resolution on that console and PlayStation 5, BioWare and Electronic Arts announced Wednesday.
The companies published a matrix of frame rate and resolution support for the game, which comprises remastered versions of the original trilogy of Mass Effect games released from 2007 to 2012.
Mass Effect Legendary Edition launches next week for PlayStation 4, Windows PC, and Xbox One, but backward compatibility on the newer consoles allows it to take advantage of their higher horsepower. And PC gamers can see frame rates of up to 240 fps, depending on their hardware configuration.
Players on consoles will be able to choose between a mode prioritizing visual quality and another prioritizing performance. Base models of the PS4 and Xbox One will offer 60 fps at 1080p resolution in the “favor framerate” setting. In the better-looking “favor quality” mode, performance will drop to 30 fps while maintaining 1080p resolution.
The midlevel PlayStation 4 Pro and Xbox One X models give players the choice of 30 fps at 4K resolution, or 60 fps at 1440p. The Xbox Series S also supports those options.
Absolute top-of-the-line performance for PlayStation consoles is 60 fps, however, with PlayStation 5 players having a choice of 4K in quality mode, or 1440p for the option emphasizing frame rate. The Xbox Series X matches the “favor quality” setting of the PS5 — 4K at 60 fps — whereas its performance mode supports frame rates of up to 120 fps at 1440p.
“Favor Framerate prioritizes the highest framerate possible by scaling native resolution and reducing some graphical features,” EA said. “Consistency of target frame rate & resolution is dependent on platform. The more powerful the hardware, the more consistently you will experience the specified target frame rate & resolution.”
Mass Effect Legendary Edition launches May 14. Its biggest changes and enhancements will be visual and cosmetic, as opposed to deleted scenes, or changed storylines. But the game’s infamous “loading elevators,” and poor-handling Mako vehicle, have been cleaned up considerably. The game will also have a photo mode to showcase its new visuals.
