Everything announced at the Square Enix Presents digital showcase

Square Enix inaugurated a new livestream event, called Square Enix Presents, with a 40-minute presentation on Thursday that highlighted what’s new and what’s next in the publisher’s catalog.

Most of the day’s news centered on the next game in the award-winning Life is Strange series. But fans also got a look at Outriders, launching on April 1, the new Hawkeye DLC that arrived today for Marvel’s Avengers, which also launches on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, and the bizarre 3D platformer Balan Wonderworld.

Life is Strange: True Colors

Life is Strange: True Colors will launch Sept. 10 on Google Stadia, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X. The sequel to 2019’s Life is Strange 2, True Colors will pull back from its predecessors’ episodic format and release its full story on the same date.

Life is Strange: True Colors will star Erika Mori as Alex Chen, a young Asian American woman with psychic powers, who moves to Colorado to discover the truth behind what happened to her brother, Gabe.

Deck Nine Games/Square Enix

Life is Strange remasters

Dontnod Entertainment’s original graphic adventure, 2015’s Life is Strange, will be remastered for new consoles, as will its three-episode prequel, 2017’s Life is Strange: Before the Storm, by Deck Nine. Both games will be included in an Ultimate Edition release of Life is Strange: True Colors on Sept. 10, and as stand-alone purchases later this year.

Project Athia/Forspoken

First announced at PlayStation’s June 2020 event, the all-new IP from Luminous Productions, originally called “Project Athia,” now has a title: Forspoken. The action-adventure stars Ella Belinska as the protagonist Frey Holland, facing off against dragons and other colossal beasts in an untamed land. Forspoken will be a PlayStation 5 console exclusive when it launches in 2022. It’s also coming to Windows PC.

Outriders

People Can Fly’s third-person loot-shooter is launching April 1 on Google Stadia, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X — and will be available for the latter two consoles via Xbox Game Pass on the same day.

Outriders got two trailers during Square Enix Presents, one detailing its story campaign, loot, and role-playing systems, called “Outriders 101,” and a CGI story trailer called “Appreciate Power.”

We played the Outriders demo earlier this month and liked what we saw.

Balan Wonderworld

The 3D platformer coming from director Yuji Naka and artist Naoto Ohshima harkens back to the two’s works for Sega in the 1990s. It’s launching on March 26, and Square Enix dropped a launch trailer that showed off the game’s dozen or so characters, and dozens of outfits for them. A playable demo of Balan Wonderworld has been available on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X since January.

Marvel’s Avengers: Black Panther and Hawkeye DLC

Both Wakanda and its king, T’Challa, will join Crystal Dynamics’ superhero adventure later this year in the War for Wakanda expansion, announced with the above teaser trailer. Black Panther will face off against his nemesis, the vibranium plunderer Klaw, in the story expansion.

The newest DLC, “Operation Hawkeye — Future Imperfect,” which launched today, also got a close-up in a lengthier trailer highlighting the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X version of Marvel’s Avengers, which launched today.

Tomb Raider: Definitive Survivor Trilogy

Crystal Dynamics also updated fans on what’s cooking for the silver anniversary celebration of the Tomb Raider franchise, which got going at the beginning of February. A three-game Tomb Raider: Definitive Survivor Trilogy bundle, comprising Tomb Raider (2013), Rise of the Tomb Raider (2015) and Shadow of the Tomb Raider (2018) is available now on the PlayStation Store and Microsoft Store. It’s $19.99, but will go up to $49.99 in two weeks.

Although the studio doesn’t have a new game to announce, there is an anime adaptation coming to Netflix and the studio says it is working to unify the storylines of the earlier (1996 to 2003) games, and the series since Crystal Dynamics took it over in 2006.

Just Cause Mobile

Square Enix announced the mobile adaptation for its open-world, over-the-top adventure back in December, at The Game Awards 2020. Just Cause Mobile is a top-down, action shooter that Square Enix says will feature 4-player co-operative missions, 30-player competitive multiplayer, and an “action-packed story campaign” in a free-to-play package. It doesn’t yet have a launch date, but it’ll land sometime this year on Android and iOS devices.

Space Invaders AR

Taito has a number of smaller games and adaptations in the works for 2021, but this adaptation of the 43-year-old shooter will put the aliens out in your surroundings, through the magic of augmented reality on a phone.
