Based on the bestselling book series by Leigh Bardugo, Shadow and Bone follows mapmaker Alina Starkov (Jessie Mei Li) who discovers she has an incredible power to summon light. In a nation torn apart by sentient darkness, this may be the key to saving the world. It’s a power that many people want, which immediately puts her life at risk. In the trailer, Alina discovers her power — and meets the formidable General Kirigan (Ben Barnes).
Shadow and Bone not only adapts the main series of Grisha books by Bardugo, but folds in stories from the Six of Crows spinoff duology that follow a gang of criminals who pull off epic heists in this magical world. In addition to Alina’s training, the trailer shows some of the Six of Crows characters — notably leader Kaz (Freddy Carter), his right hand Inej (Amita Suman), and sharpshooter Jesper (Kit Young) — gearing up.
Shadow and Bone premieres on Netflix on April 23.
