A24’s Zola turns an infamous Twitter thread into a wild thriller

‘You wanna hear a story about how me and this bitch fell out?’

Petrana Radulovic is an entertainment reporter specializing in animation, fandom culture, theme parks, Disney, and young adult fantasy franchises.

Based on an absolutely wild 148-part Twitter thread by Aziah “Zola” King, Zola follows a cross-country road trip that takes multiple unexpected turns.

“You wanna hear a story about how me and this bitch fell out?” Zola (Taylour Paige) asks as the trailer picks up, echoing the start of the infamous Twitter thread. “It’s kinda long but full of suspense.”

Zola and new friend Stefani (Riley Keough) head down to Florida on an impromptu road trip, aiming to make as much money as possible at Florida strip clubs. But while it’s all glitter, money, and tiddies at first, things soon take a dark turn when Zola realizes that it’s not just dancing that Stefani’s signed them up for. Enter greedy pimps, cop cars with flashing lights and sirens, and the absolutely messy bitch that is Stefani pulling Zola into the chaotic whirlpool of her life.

Zola premiered at Sundance in 2020. It’s set to hit theaters this summer.
