Cruella goes dark to face off against a cutthroat fashion mogul

The Cruella De Vil Wears Prada

Of all the Disney villain origin stories we needed, it was Cruella De Vil’s that we perhaps needed the least. She kills puppies — is there more to it? And yet, the second trailer for Disney’s live-action Cruella reveals an explosive, ego-fueled, fashion feud full of haute couture, barking dogs, and absolutely killer hair. It doesn’t seem so much a justification for Cruella’s dog-killing future self so much as it is a dark, twisted explanation.

Okay... you have my attention, Cruella.

Starring Emma Stone as the iconic villainess, Cruella follows one young fashion designer’s descent into villainy as she faces off against the Baroness (Emma Thompson), the head of a fashion house who’s giving serious Miranda Priestly vibes. Cruella appears to be working as the woman’s assistant, which means this is basically The Devil Wears Prada but make it a villain origin story.

Cruella was originally set to be a theater-only release, but it will now premier on Disney Plus Premier Access as well. If you’re already in need of a Cruella fix, a YA novel inspired by the movie is out now.
