League of Legends card game Legends of Runeterra is getting a new expansion called Guardians of the Ancient, and Riot Games released the add-on’s first trailer on Monday. The new expansion will be part of the Empire of the Ascended set and will introduce 42 new cards in total, including three new champions, and a few new mechanics to the online card game.
The trailer is narrated by Zilean, the Chronokeeper, who is watching over the nations of Runeterra as they threaten to tear each other apart. In one of Zilean’s vision we can see a living mountain — who looks a little like Malphite — rise to defend its lands, while in another we see Irelia preparing to defend Ionia from Noxian invaders. Things in each vision seem to get dire, but before all hope is lost, Zilean seems to turn back time to give the defenders a second chance.
On its own, the expansion trailer is a great animated cinematic, but it’s also possible that it could be hinting at new mechanics that might greet players when the expansion arrives. The Legends of Runeterra website says, “If you don’t like your fate, just pick a new one,” which certainly fits with Zilean’s emphasis on choice and fate at the end of the trailer.
For now though, the developer hasn’t revealed much about the new season outside of three cards. Riot will reveal new cards every day at 12 p.m. EDT until the expansion is released on May 5.
