Monster Hunter Rise’s April update hits tonight, adds elder dragons and Chameleos

It’s time to uncap your Hunter Rank

Ryan Gilliam (he/him) has worked at Polygon for nearly seven years. He primarily spends his time writing guides for massively popular games like Diablo 4 & Destiny 2.

Monster Hunter Rise will add elder dragons and more on April 27, Capcom revealed in a new video on Tuesday. Hunters will finally be able to uncap their Hunter Rank and fight even more powerful monsters. American players can download and play the update on Tuesday, April 27 at 8 p.m.

Monster Hunter Rise is an awesome Monster Hunter game for veterans and new players, but it also ends very abruptly, without some of the endgame features we expected. But Rise’s latest update should help occupy fans who burned through the game’s existing content shortly after launch.

The new trailer for Monster Hunter Rise reveals three big monsters coming in update 2.0: Chameleos, Teostra, and Kushala Daora. The latter two monsters are returning elder dragons, which are super-tough monsters that yielded some of the best gear in Monster Hunter: World.

In addition to the new monsters, there are also standard hunts for Apex monsters like Arzuros, Rathalos, and Diablos. Apex monsters are more powerful versions of standard monsters, with faster, harder-hitting attacks. Monster Hunter: Rise had some Apex monsters at launch, but only in its Rampage mode.

Of course, this is Monster Hunter, so all of the new and improved monsters come with weapons and armor to craft out of their hide. The update also includes Layered Armor, a kind of armor piece you can craft that changes what your armor looks like without affecting your perks and stats. The trailer makes it sound like players can turn any piece of monster armor they like into layered armor at the Smithy.

One of the biggest improvements in 2.0 is the uncapped Hunter Rank. This effectively adds an experience bar to Rise, letting you endlessly rank up to show off and gain access to new hunts.

Capcom revealed that Monster Hunter Rise has more in store for players, and soon. At the end of May, players will get another update, version 3.0. The May update will include a new ending to the game and new monsters. It’s currently unclear if this means that version 2.0 won’t wrap up Monster Hunter Rise’s story, which currently ends on a major cliffhanger.

Monster Hunter Rise will also get crossover DLC with the upcoming Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin, which Capcom will launch on July 9. Players with saves from one game will get a unique armor set in the other.

Monster Hunter Rise initially launched on March 26, exclusively for Nintendo Switch. Rise will come to Windows PC early next year.
