Knockout City is free for EA Play members — on Xbox Game Pass, too

Everyone else can still try the first week for free, too

Knockout City, the multiplayer dodgeball game coming May 21 from Electronic Arts, will be free and fully accessible for all EA Play subscribers, including those who have the program through Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.

Electronic Arts announced the availability in a blog post on Monday. Knockout City, which is also launching on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Windows PC (and is cross-play and cross-progression compatible among all of them) is $19.99 at launch for those who aren’t EA Play members.

All EA Play subscribers also get one free in-game outfit with Knockout City. The game will have a $29.99 deluxe edition option that includes eight customization options; EA Play members may get this content by paying $9.99 extra, EA said, but EA Play Pro subscribers — an option available only on PC — already get that with their subscription, too.

For players who aren’t EA Play subscribers, the full game is free to play for their first seven days; if they want to keep going, they can buy it and carry over any progression and items they earned in the trial.

Knockout City was announced back in February, and as an all-new sport, it was a little tough to grasp its fundamentals at first. But it’s grown on us, thanks to a couple of beta weekends held since then, including a big multi-platform event at the beginning of the month.

The game functions somewhat like a co-operative competitive shooter, with dodgeballs as the projectiles and a futuristic cityscape as the map. Velan Studios, makers of Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit for the Nintendo Switch, has been developing Knockout City for the EA Originals label over the past two years.
