Dead by Daylight players get an unexpected Left 4 Dead lore surprise

Bill Overbeck makes a dramatic return

Dead by Daylight’s newest tome focuses on an unexpected character: Bill Overbeck. The Left 4 Dead veteran, who first came to Dead by Daylight in 2017, is getting his time in the spotlight, and players get to see his origin story as a soldier.

Behaviour Interactive, the developer of Dead by Daylight, has been slowly unravelling a whole multiverse of lore behind the horror game. There’s always been a bit of an odd contrast in the game’s roster; some of the characters are entirely original, like a murderous K-pop star, while others are licensed.

Licensed characters like Freddy Krueger and Stranger Things’ Demogorgon don’t get many cosmetics or updates, because that would a the owner of those properties to sign off on those things. Things quickly get complicated, and so most of these characters exist on an island away from the main storyline.

However, it looks like Bill gets his own set of Tome memories, which are short works of fiction and animated cinematics. These memories show things from before the character was brought into the Fog and became a Dead by Daylight character, and it highlights both killers and survivors. Bill’s memories appear to be a gruesome look back at the Vietnam War, which means that if someone wants to collect all of the Left 4 Dead lore, they’ll need to check the story out.

The newest story tome, Forsaken, also includes new story content for the Plague, an ancient priestess of Babylon. The memories, along with in-game challenges for players, are set to launch on May 5.
