Sweet Tooth season 2 announced by Netflix

The first season of Netflix’s post-apocalyptic drama Sweet Tooth ended with certifiable cliffhangers. The finale made it clear: There was more to the story of a hybrid deer boy and his towering protector, if the streamer was willing to explore it. And thankfully, fans of the comic adaptation will at least get a second season.

Netflix announced Sweet Tooth season 2 on Thursday, with a Twitter video featuring several members of the cast. The next installment will pick back up with Gus (Christian Convery) and Jepperd (Nonso Anozie) on their various paths. Creators Jim Mickle (Stake Land, Cold in July) will return to oversee the series.

Though diverting from the darkness of the comic creator Jeff Lemire’s source material in significant ways, the eight-episode first season realized an authentically Amblin-esque adventure through a verdant post-apocalyptic world. As Mickle told us, the idea was to match the tension of his horror work with the tangible-but-otherworldly imagery of a Jim Henson production. A fairytale in the backwoods of America.

“I’d love that kind of world,” Mickle recently told Polygon. “If I wasn’t making film or TV, I’d probably be living in the woods somewhere like Gus. And so there was like a romantic quality of that. All those things felt like fresh directions to go with a sort of end-of-the-world story.”

Produced by Robert Downey Jr. and Susan Downey, Sweet Tooth season 1 co-starred Adeel Akhtar (Murdered by My Father), Aliza Vellani (Upload), Stefania LaVie Owen (Krampus), Dania Ramirez (Once Upon a Time), Neil Sandilands (The Flash), with Will Forte (MacGruber) and the legendary James Brolin as the show’s narrator.

There’s no release date for Sweet Tooth season 2, but with production on the first season occurring in New Zealand amid the COVID-19 pandemic, one expects the show to pick up speed after an official announcement.
