World of Warcraft’s bad boy orc just went out like a total Chad

Garrosh Hellscream is a strange character in the World of Warcraft lore. He rose to prominence during Cataclysm as the Horde’s Warchief, showed a few glimpses of being a noble and just leader, and then immediately took the train to villain town. Throughout Mists of Pandaria and Warlords of Draenor, he was one of the game’s central antagonists. He died in Draenor, and we thought we were rid of him — but Shadowlands seems to have gone ahead and made that final.

The position of Warchief is technically that of a politician, but Garrosh’s platform was mostly that he was super racist towards everyone who isn’t an orc. As a result of this and his other bad decisions, the players formed a raid to storm Orgrimmar. Garrosh was put on trial, but escaped, and jumped into another timeline to cause more havoc before we finally found him and watched Thrall kill him for real. (Don’t ask, it’s pretty complicated.)

Throughout the years, fans have mourned Garrosh. He was terrible, sure, but he was definitely fun to hate. Other people wished they could have seen more of Garrosh’s good side, and even pointed out reasons why the rest of the Horde set him up to fail. “Garrosh did nothing wrong” is both a popular community meme and a regular argument on lore forums.

But with Shadowlands, someone being dead doesn’t mean that they’re gone forever. The game has hinted that in alternative timelines, Garrosh Hellscream turned out to be a great guy. Then, we got to see Garrosh show up in Revendreth, where we learned that vampires were milking his soul for tasty anima. He even features in the new raid! It almost seemed as though the game was setting up a redemption arc.

Turns out: haha, nope! Garrosh goes out saying he did nothing wrong, he’d do it all again, and his predecessor and mentor Thrall sucks.

One fan animator has already created a “remake” of the cinematic with some improved models and animations.

Other fans are making memes about the character and his legendary sendoff — especially compared to Sylvanas, who is currently going through a much messier fate.

Garrosh is probably mega-dead now. If you die in the Shadowlands, you don’t get a third chance. Fans aren’t thrilled with World of Warcraft’s main plot, but this one little side cinematic has earned a lot of love. Garrosh did a lot of things wrong, but at least he’s consistent.
