After a three-season run, Jodie Whittaker will move on from the role of the Doctor on Doctor Who. Whittaker and showrunner Chris Chibnall will both be leaving the show next year following season 13 of the current Doctor Who run, the BBC announced Thursday.

Whittaker’s Doctor will get three more specials before regenerating

But Whittaker and Chibnall still have plenty of Doctor Who ahead of them. Whittaker will appear as the Thirteenth Doctor in a six-part Event Serial this fall. BBC One has also added a third special to the calendar for 2022, which will debut in the fall.
Doctor Who fans have multiple chances over the next year to bid farewell to the long-running series’ first female doctor and the showrunner who brought her to life. The BBC also confirmed that the Doctor will regenerate again as Whittaker departs.
Whittaker and Chibnall’s final Doctor Who season will premiere on the BBC later this year. Fans got a new trailer at SDCC last weekend that revealed a more serialized approach for the series going forward and prepared fans for upcoming cliffhangers.
