At the end of the original Venom, Eddie Brock and his blood-thirsty symbiote have reached an understanding: Eddie can live a normal life, and sometimes that life will include letting Venom eat criminals. But in the sequel, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, it seems the two have hit a rough patch.
In the movie’s new trailer, which was released on Monday, Eddie has gotten tired of hunting down criminals for his alter ego/partner to devour, so he’s back to being a loser as far as Venom is concerned. Of course, both sides of this rocky relationship are still played by Tom Hardy, who is somehow weirder as a human than as a symbiote.
But there’s more going on here than just relationship drama. The trailer also gives us a better look at the movie’s villain Cletus Kasady (Woody Harrelson), who plays host for the symbiote Carnage. Cletus is in maximum security prison for his crimes as a serial killer, but when Eddie comes to profile him, Cletus takes a bite out of Venom’s host and winds up with just enough symbiote DNA to create a whole new and more dangerous version: Carnage.
Venom: Let There Be Carnage will also bring back Anne (Michelle Williams), Eddie’s love interest from the original movie, but it seems like she’s now engaged to someone a little less exciting than Eddie. The sequel will also feature Naomie Harris as Shriek — who we briefly see in the trailer — and is directed by Andy Serkis.
Venom: Let There Be Carnage is set to be released exclusively in theaters on Sept. 24, though it’s worth noting that this new trailer removes the release date and simply says “this fall.”
