Charismatic but mysterious priests and creepy towns are a perfect pairing, and both happen to be at the center of Netflix’s new horror series, Midnight Mass. The streaming service released the first trailer for the new limited series from Mike Flanagan (The Haunting of Hill House, Doctor Sleep) on Monday.
Midnight Mass is set in the small community of Crocket Island, where a disgraced former resident (played by Zack Gilford), returns to find a charismatic new priest (Hamish Linklater), who has brought with him strange and unexplainable miracles.
Of course, since this is a Mike Flanagan series, things quickly get creepy, as supernatural terrors start to creep into the town and drive apart its already divided community. In the trailer, we get glimpses of ghostly figures, discolored eyes, and something that looks an awful lot like a cult.
Just like The Haunting of Hill House, Flanagan will direct all seven episodes of Midnight Mass. Although Flanagan and some of the writers and producers of The Haunting series are working on Midnight Mass as well, the director has already said on Twitter that this new series is not at all connected to The Haunting.
Midnight Mass will premiere on Sept. 24, only on Netflix.
