Chocobo GP puts a Final Fantasy spin on a kart racer

Mario Kart meets Final Fantasy in Chocobo GP, a new racer from Square Enix. The game will come to Nintendo Switch with a 2022 release window, as announced at a Nintendo Direct on Thursday.

The racer looks like a standard kart game, except with its own Final Fantasy flair. You’ll be able to drift boost and use attacks to throw off your competitors, but instead of hitting character with blue or red shells, you’ll be able to use magic like Fire, Fira, or Firaga from the Final Fantasy universe to race your way to first place.

In it, you’ll get to play as popular character from across the Final Fantasy franchise like the chocobo, Shiroma, and Vivi. And while there are plenty of karts to choose from, you can also put your chocobo on roller skates for a smooth ride.

Courses are inspired by the universe where you’ll be able to speed your way through courses like, “Cid’s test course,” inspired by the pilot and mechanic you fight alongside in Final Fantasy 7.
