Kirby and the Forgotten Land announced for Nintendo Switch

A 3D take on the Kirby formula

A new Kirby game is coming to Nintendo Switch, and it looks like an interesting addition to the series. Kirby and the Forgotten Land is a new adventure starring the pink puffball, and it has a planned release date of spring 2022. The first trailer showed Kirby freely exploring 3D areas, which included an abandoned urban city, an arcade, and some lush jungles.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land’s existence was leaked earlier in the day by Nintendo’s Japanese release calendar. It’s Japanese title translates to Kirby: Discovery of the Stars.

The new game has a post-apocalyptic vibe that almost makes it feel like a cuter take on The Last of Us. Kirby is able to traverse the map freely with his signature float ability, although not everyone in this abandoned land looks friendly. Kirby has to contend with some familiar enemies, including a giant crocodile-like beast snapping at his heels.

The last mainline Kirby game was Kirby Star Allies in 2018, which was a side-perspective platformer — a more familiar format for the Kirby franchise. Kirby and the Forgotten Land seems to be taking a step out of the hero’s usual comfort zone.
