Everything we know about Scott Pilgrim Takes Off season 2

Netflix’s Scott Pilgrim anime has room for another season, but the showrunners are happy with just one

Somehow, Scott Pilgrim has returned. Almost 20 years after the release of the original comic, and more than a decade after Edgar Wright’s cult classic movie Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Scott, Ramona, Knives, and the whole League of Evil Exes are back for an anime on Netflix. And it turns out it’s actually fantastic.

But if you’ve already blitzed through the show’s eight-episode season, you might be curious if season 2 is on the way, or trying to piece together what exactly that ending teaser is hinting at. In that case, we’re here to help with everything we know about Scott Pilgrim Takes Off season 2.

[Ed. note: This piece contains spoilers for Scott Pilgrim Takes Off.]

Is Scott Pilgrim Takes Off season 2 happening?

We don’t know for sure, but it really doesn’t seem like it. Co-creators Bryan Lee O’Malley and BenDavid Grabinski have said there aren’t plans for a season 2, and that the story is designed to be self-contained and completed after the first season.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, O’Malley said, “We loved what we did. We put it all in there. We don’t have any ideas lying on the floor.” Taking his point even further, O’Malley added, “People are always complaining about how shows get canceled after one season. So we hedged our bets immediately, and tried to make a self-contained one season.”

Grabinski had similar feelings, saying that they weren’t working on anything and had no official ideas. “We put everything we had into this, and we think it has a really great ending that we’re proud of,” Grabinski told Rolling Stone.

Both creators noted that just because they don’t have plans for a second season, it’s not impossible, just very unlikely. And that’s not surprising. After all, not many people ever expected Science Saru to make a Scott Pilgrim anime in the first place, let alone for it to so completely remix the original story.

What would Scott Pilgrim Takes Off season 2 be about?

As we see in Scott Pilgrim Takes Off’s post-credits scene, there’s still more story left to tell with these characters in their new timeline. The credits scene shows us Gideon and Julie plotting something, and maybe even trying to revive the League of Evil Exes — though it’s not clear why they might want to do that or what they might be after.

No matter what the tease actually means, it certainly feels like there could be more stories in the Scott Pilgrim universe. That being said, O’Malley told Polygon the credit stinger is intended as a parody of Marvel, so it’s really just one last joke to end the series on.

When would Scott Pilgrim season 2 come out?

There’s really no way to know this at all. Science Saru, the animation studio behind the anime, doesn’t take on too many projects, and has really only done about two a year for the last several years. More importantly, there’s no telling when the prestigious studio may want to (or be able to) return to the franchise. Then there’s the question of when O’Malley might want to return to the story — it seems like he enjoys a gap between trips to the Scott Pilgrim universe.

Another potential problem for a second season could also be the all-star cast that carried over from the movie to Scott Pilgrim Takes Off. Gathering stars like Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Chris Evans, and Kieran Culkin together again isn’t an easy scheduling task, but the fact that it’s an animated show with voice acting should at least make it easier than getting them in the same room.
