All the Mr. and Mrs. Smith season 2 news we’ve heard so far

Mr. and Mrs. Smith’s first season arrived on Amazon Prime Video all at once, but if you’ve already plowed through all eight episodes, you’re probably wondering what’s next for the undercover(ish) couple. Of course, you’d also know that whether or not there’s room for a second season is... kind of up in the air.

Amazon hasn’t made any official announcements about the show coming back just yet. But after a cliffhanger like that, it’s worth laying out all the clues we have about Mr. and Mrs. Smith season 2 we have so far.

Is Mr. and Mrs. Smith season 2 happening?

We don’t know for sure, but it certainly seems possible. The show is built on a premise that could easily span a dozen very fun seasons, but Prime Video hasn’t made anything official yet. So we’ll have to wait for word from the streaming company on whether or not season 2 is really happening.

According to series co-creator and showrunner Francesca Sloane, season 2 talks are definitely in the works.

“It really depends on how everything is received,” Sloane told The Hollywood Reporter. “Of course, while you’re in the muck of making something this difficult, you really don’t even let yourself fantasize about the future. It [sic] just about trying to get to the end. But now that we’ve all done it it’s sort of like a childbirth. I love the baby! So, there are talks of season two and we have some really cool ideas for it — I’m collaborating with Donald and Taofik Kolade, who wrote on Atlanta with us. He’s incredible and I think he’d be a great addition in terms of voice… if we do go forward with it. We’ll see.”

When would Mr. and Mrs. Smith season 2 release?

This one is even harder to say for sure. Since the series doesn’t have an official renewal, there’s no telling when its production could start, when scripts will be written, or when schedules could be lined up to get everyone back on set. The one upside is that because of the show’s format, production really only needs the titular Mr. and Mrs. Smith — Donald Glover and Maya Erskine — in the same place for the whole season. Then it can work around its guest stars for the rest of filming.

What would Mr. and Mrs. Smith season 2 be about?

[Ed. note: The rest of this story contains spoilers for Mr. and Mrs. Smith.]

Well, the first thing a season 2 would have to do is give us a conclusion to season 1’s massive cliffhanger: Who survives and how? Other than that, it’s not hard to imagine how the show could get the lead couple back into the groove of missions. Maybe they actually took out the Smiths who were sent to kill them, and then spend the season going after the organization that brought them together in the first place.

Or hey, maybe it could be an anthology series that follows a different new couple every season. Who knows! Either way, there are plenty of options for what Mr. and Mrs. Smith season 2 could be, if it happens.

Who would be cast in Mr. and Mrs. Smith season 2?

Given everything we just said above, it seems like the only restrictions on who could show up next season are people who died in this one. Season 1 stacked up some incredible guest stars like Ron Perlman, Alexander Skarsgård, John Turturro, and Michaela Coel. so the sky’s the limit for a potential season 2.

Is it worth watching the 2005 movie while I wait?

Absolutely. Is it a tremendous movie? No. Is it still a lot of fun? 100%. Plus it stars Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, two unbelievably beautiful people being sexy and trying to kill each other. What’s not to love?
