Nintendo showed off an external home storage system for Animal Crossing: New Horizons in its October announcement, allowing players to access stored goods from a storage shed. But as it turns out, the Wooden storage shed and Storage shed — two separate items — aren’t immediately available after downloading the 2.0 update.
Instead, they’ll become available after you’ve upgraded your home storage past the 500,000 Bells storage level, which means you need to have a fully upgraded house, too. You can do this by visiting Tom Nook at Resident Services and paying 500,000 Bells to Tom Nook, if you hadn’t already. (If you have, skip this step.) Construction will be done the next day, and that’s when you’ll be able to access the storage sheds, right back at Resident Services.

You can purchase the Wooden storage shed DIY recipe with Nook Miles — it costs 6,000 of them. Remember, this item will only how up if you meet 500,000 Bells storage level at your home. To craft it, it’s gonna cost you 30 wood, hardwood, and softwood each, plus 10 iron nuggets.
It can be placed anywhere on the island and have full access to your home storage, which is super handy. If you place multiples of these around your island, you’ll always have easy access.
The second shed, simply called Storage shed, is available in the Nook Miles shopping catalog further down the list. This one’s an actual item, so it’ll be delivered to your house the next day. It works exactly like the wooden shed, but it just looks a bit different. Speaking of looking different, each of these sheds can be customized like another item in New Horizons. It can match your island, no matter what.
Neither shed expands your home storage — just provides access to what you already have. It will, however, grow alongside further home storage upgrades.
