With the resurgence of Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra on Netflix — and, it must be said, the series’ creators departing a live-action adaptation — the Avatar fandom has no lack of events to react to. But Nickelodeon just added one more, by making the original test pilot for Avatar: The Last Airbender available on Twitch.
The half-hour pilot features early versions of Aang, Zuko, Sokka, and Katara — under the name of Kya — flying on Appa the air bison, slaying a sea serpent, and battling it out over a Fire Nation fort. Nickelodeon streamed it on Twitch as part of a line up of supplemental Avatar: The Last Airbender, including footage of the martial-arts master who modeled Bending forms for the series, comedic shorts, and interviews with animators.
About 43 minutes into the stream, however, is the real gold: The full and unaired test pilot for Avatar: The Last Airbender.
It’s not at one-to-one match for any episode in the final show, but Hawky-eyed fans will catch many elements that were repurposed later in the series.
