Genndy Tartakovsky’s epic primordial animated series Primal returns to Adult Swim this fall. The series follows a lone caveman and his dinosaur partner as they forge an unlikely bond in a dangerous world. The first season premiered in October 2019 on Adult Swim, and won several Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation, for several Tartakovsky, art director Scott Wills, and character designer Stephen DeStefano.

Tartakovsky’s previous projects include Dexter’s Laboratory, Samurai Jack, and the three-season 2003 TV series Star Wars: Clone Wars. (Not to be confused with Dave Filoni and Henry Gilroy’s seven-season TV series, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, which wrapped up this year.)

Primal is intended primarily for an adult audience — it doesn’t shy away from death or violence, even against cute baby dinosaurs. It packs emotion into its dialogue-free action, telling a story of mutual need, connection, and survival in a gorgeous but deadly prehistoric world. The first five episodes are currently available on Adult Swim’s website and on HBO Max.

Five new episodes of Primal will premiere on Adult Swim on Oct. 4 at 11:30 p.m. EDT. In addition, the series has been renewed for a second season. In a press release, Cartoon Network announced that season 2 will also include 10 episodes. No date for the second season has been announced.
