After Anthem’s tutorial, you’ll find yourself on a mission called “Lighting a Fire,” but the game isn’t clear about what it wants you to do our how it wants you to do it.
You’ll need to find three Uncommon Embers, which you can gather from Crafting Nodes out in the world. Anthem’s menu says you need to grab materials in Freeplay. But don’t trust it. You can grab these Uncommon Embers while doing side contracts for folks around Fort Tarsis. Before venturing out into the world, pick up all the missions on your map, jump in your Javelin, and select a contract — not Freeplay.
Early contracts take you around the world, fighting Dominion and other enemies. Take the missions slow, and look around for big, glowing materials in the world. These come in all sorts of shapes like fungus, mushrooms, crystals, etc.

Either interact with these nodes or attack them. Some materials will pop out when you destroy the node. You’ll have to rely on randomness. There’s a small chance with every node that a green or common resource will pop out. This is the Uncommon Ember, and it’s the item you’re looking for.
Repeat this process, running off the beaten path to clear out nodes while completing side contracts. If you’re with friends, breaking the node will break it for everyone else as well. Be sure to call out their locations to help your buddies.
Collect three Uncommon Embers, and head back to Fort Tarsis so you can advance the story.
