Baldur’s Gate 3 is packed with NPCs and side quests, so you can be forgiven for losing track of one, or two, or 50 of them. Dammon, however, is an NPC that you’ll definitely want to keep an eye on, especially if you’re interested in working through the companion quest for Karlach — the burning hot Tiefling Barbarian you can recruit in act 1.
Dammon is a gifted Blacksmith who can manipulate Infernal Iron (a very rare resource in Baldur’s Gate 3) to help repair Karlach’s heart in “The Hellion’s Heart” companion quest. Unfortunately, Dammon’s life exists outside your player character’s — like any good Dungeons and Dragons NPC — and so he moves around in inconvenient ways over the course of the game.
In this Baldur’s Gate 3 guide, we’ll tell you where you can find Infernal Iron, where and when to take it to Dammon in act 1, and where to find Dammon after the Emerald Grove.
How do you get Infernal Iron?
Infernal Iron is hard to come by in Baldur’s Gate 3, but it is an essential resource if you want to be a friend (or more than just a friend) to Karlach. We have a separate guide to help you find Infernal Iron.

Once you have a piece of Infernal Iron (or two), you’ll need to actually find Dammon, which can prove challenging.
Dammon being where you need him when you need him depends entirely on the decisions you make during the first act of Baldur’s Gate 3. He’s part of the Tiefling crew in the Emerald Grove, and he shares the same fate as his kin — both good and bad.
If the Tieflings aren’t in the Emerald Grove anymore, Dammon won’t be there either. If they are in the Emerald Grove, however, he’ll be hanging out in his small blacksmithing shop to the north of the grove, near the prison.

We successfully killed the Goblin Camp leaders and returned to Dammon when we met back up with Halsin in the Emerald Grove. And while the Tieflings were on their way out of town by then, Dammon was lagging behind a little bit, and was able to give Karlach a tune-up before he left. As long as you approach Dammon with the Infernal Iron before the Tieflings leave, you can progress Karlach’s quest during act 1. You can tell if Dammon is still in town or not based on the map icon for “The Hellion’s Heart” quest.
But be warned. While everything went smoothly for the Tieflings and Druids in our playthrough, some players have reported that Dammon can die in any conflicts that happen in the Emerald Grove. If Dammon dies, you won’t meet another smith who is able to help Karlach for dozens more in-game hours — and we’re currently unsure if you’ll ever meet one again. So make sure to either stop the invasion of the Emerald Grove or tell the Tieflings to leave. Otherwise, you could be unable to help complete Karlach’s quest for the rest of the game.

Assuming Dammon escapes the Emerald Grove with his life (or leaves peacefully with the rest of his crew), you can meet up with him again in act 2 at the Last Light Inn. This gives you a second chance to give him some Infernal Iron if you missed him in the Emerald Grove.
However, if you gave him Infernal Iron back in the Emerald Grove and have more to give him at Last Light, he can “fix” Karlach before he reaches Baldur’s Gate. Give him a second piece and he’ll fix up her heart, allowing her to finally touch people without burning them. This opens up Karlach as a romance option back at camp and just generally makes her really excited for hugs.
However, Dammon warns Karlach that her heart has a fatal flaw and is going to overheat if she doesn’t go back to hell and get it fixed. This is a bit of a touchy subject with Karlach, and even if you talk to her about it, she’ll say she’d rather die than go back.
This will complete the Hellion’s Heart quest while also suggesting that you’ll eventually need to convince Karlach to return home or lose her forever.
If you missed Dammon in either location (and he’s alive), he promises that he’ll eventually meet you in the titular town of Baldur’s Gate, which you won’t reach for a very long time. Just make sure that you find more Infernal Iron before you reach him so that you can finish Karlach’s quest.
