On May 1, Gearbox debuted hours of Borderlands 3 gameplay. Popular streamers played a section from the game’s opening hour to their audiences. Players learned about new features coming to Borderlands 3, but the most interesting footage out there isn’t about the gameplay at all; it’s the skill trees for the new vault hunters.

Skills work a little differently in Borderlands 3. The three traditional trees are still there, but there are side paths for unlocking abilities that augment your Action Skill. For Amara, players can have one Action Skill, one Action Skill Augment, and one Action Skill Element active at one time. Based on the UI, it looks like players can mix and match these to experiment with new types of Action Skill combinations.

Remnant Passive Ability 1-3 When Amara kills an enemy with a gun or Action Skill, she creates a homing projectile that seeks out a new enemy dealing her Action Skill Elemental Damage. Any Overkill Damage is added to the projectile’s damage. 33 Damage

Jab Cross Passive Ability 1-5 Whenever Amara deals melee damage to an enemy, she gains increased Action Skill Damage and increased Weapon Damage for a few seconds. 10% Weapon Damage, 11% Action Skill Damage, 20 second Duration
Guardian Angel Passive Ability N/A When Amara enters Fight For Your Life, she immediately gains a Second Wind, restores her health, and creates an Action Skill Elemental Nova that knocks back nearby enemies. This skill has a long cooldown. 100% Max Health Restored, 60 second Cooldown
Glamour Action Skill Augment N/A Enemies damaged by Amara's Action Skill become confused and temporarily attack their allies. However, Action Skill Cooldown is increased. If Amara targets an enemy with Phasegrasp, enemies near the Grasped target are confused as well. -60% Damage, 6 second Confuse Duration, +20% Cooldown
Blitz Passive Ability N/A Melee Override. Press the melee button to make Amara dash a short distance forward and perform a special melee strike, dealing Elemental Melee Damage. If a Blitz melee attack kills an enemy, Blitz's cooldown is immediately reset. 10 second Cooldown
