When you first boot up Borderlands 3, you’ll discover a horrible reality: You can only equip two guns at once. If you’re looking for a solution to your equip limit in the early parts of the game, you’re out of luck. As you keep playing the main campaign, you’ll unlock new equip slots for guns. Eventually, you can hold four at once.
Here’s a spoiler-free look at when you’ll get those new weapon slots, if you’re dying for a bit more variety.
Unlocking the third weapons slot
You don’t have to wait too long for this first upgrade. Play through the first hour or two of the game. This part essentially acts like a prologue to the rest of Borderlands 3. When you finish the area, you’ll leave Pandora on a giant spaceship, and you’ll unlock the ability to equip three different guns at the same time.
Unlocking the fourth weapon slot
The second and final weapon inventory upgrade is quite a bit farther down the road. This one also gets farther into spoiler territory, but we’ll do our best to avoid specifics.

After Pandora, you’ll head to Promethea — a giant city planet. There, you’ll go on a long quest that spans a few different areas. When it comes time to leave the planet for good, you’ll get your fourth inventory slot upgrade. This is probably about 10 or 12 hours into the game, depending on your pace.
And that’s it. Once you’ve finished Promethea, you’ll be able to hold four guns at once in Borderlands 3.
