2016 marks the 30th birthday of Dark Horse Comics, the company that brought us Hellboy, Sin City, and quite a few more of the biggest comics of the past three decades.
Dark Horse is commemorating the occasion with the cover of this month's Diamond's Previews, the catalog that comic shops order their books from. The wraparound cover by Duncan Fegredo is packed with Dark Horse Comics characters from every decade of the company's existence, whether it was their first home or simply the publisher that brought them to a wider audience. Dark Horse has given Polygon the opportunity to reveal the cover for the first time. Check it out below, and then check the list of characters in it. How many could you recognize?
Of course, any good birthday comes with a good party, and in this case that party is on June 4, Dark Horse Day, when participating comics shops will pass out a free Dark Horse Sampler.
"As Dark Horse Comics turns 30," a representative of the publisher told Polygon, "we present a look back at some of our top titles from each past decade — including a brand-new story to launch us into the new one! Included: Aliens vs. Predator: Blood Time (1994), by Randy Stradley and Phill Norwood, Sin City: Daddy's Little Girl (1996), by Frank Miller, The Umbrella Academy: Anywhere But Here (2008), by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá, and a new Buffy the Vampire Slayer tale by Christos Gage!"
With Avatar Aang and Hellboy rubbing shoulders with Liara T'soni and Conan the Barbarian — not to mention the Lone Wolf and Cub picking up a copy of Usagi Yojimbo — that's a poster we wouldn't mind hanging on our office wall.
