Comics exist everywhere: in paperback issues, hardcover books, Sunday newspapers and, of course, on the internet. A new collection from Comixology puts a spotlight on the realm of webcomics, and the unique ways in which they spread across the internet.
Hit Reblog: Comics That Caught Fire comes from Hope Nicholson and Megan Kearney, and “showcases the viral sensations of the webcomics world and the true stories behind their creators,” according to an announcement from Comixology. The book explores the “ups and downs of internet fame, from IP theft to book deals, and all the trials of becoming an overnight sensation after gaining 10,000 reblogs in a single night.”
Viral comics in the internet’s earliest days, ranging from xkcd to Cyanide and Happiness and The Perry Bible Fellowship, helped to foster an entire community and transform comics on the internet. From the early to mid-2000s, comics developed a newfound audience on the internet, with dedicated readers checking in on a daily or weekly basis to keep up with the artists.
Hit Reblog: Comics That Caught Fire will feature interviews and artwork from some of the internet’s most popular comic artists and writers, the people behind comics like “This is Fine,” All Houses Matter and No Take, Only Throw. The pages seen below will be featured in Comixology’s 2018 Preview Book at San Diego Comic-Con.
