Possibly in tribute to actor Chadwick Boseman

Digital comics retailer Comixology is offering over 200 Black Panther titles for free. The digital comics retailer’s entire library of single-issue Black Panther comics is available to download at no charge, including all published issues of the critically acclaimed current run, which has been written by Ta-Nehisi Coates since 2016. Spinoff series featuring other Black Panther characters like Shuri and Killmonger are also available for free, as well as Avengers: Wakanda Forever.

The move is presumably a tribute to Black Panther actor Chadwick Boseman, who passed away in August at the age of 43. In a statement posted to his Twitter account, Boseman’s family confirmed that he was diagnosed with stage III colon cancer in 2016 which progressed to stage IV. “A true fighter,” the statement reads, “Chadwick persevered through it all and brought you many of the films you have come to love so much.” In addition to bringing Marvel’s King T’Challa to life on the big screen, Boseman portrayed several famous Black Americans in historical dramas, including Jackie Robinson in 42, James Brown in Get on Up, and Thurgood Marshall in Marshall.

Comixology hasn’t issued any sort of statement or promotion around the free Black Panther comics or indicated how long they will be available. Polygon has reached out for information and will update this post accordingly.
