After years of anguish in development hell, a live-action Sandman series if finally arriving to our mortal plane. Out of Netflix’s Tudum fan event on Saturday, fans of Neil Gaiman’s comic creation got a first look at actor Tom Sturridge (Far From the Maddening Cry) as Dream of the Endless, the title character of the upcoming The Sandman TV series.

Based on the legendary DC Comics series of the same name, created by Gaiman and the crème de la crème of late ’80s/early ’90s comics artists, Netflix’s The Sandman has taken a long road to film adaptation. Previous attempts to bring the Sandman series to the big screen involved a 1990s film project, which fell apart in development hell. In 2013, Gaiman announced he would team up with Joseph Gordon-Levitt to bring the project to life as a feature film for New Line, but in 2018, Gordon-Levitt left the project, citing creative differences with the company. The new series is pegged as “the most expensive TV series that DC Entertainment has ever done.”

Joining Sturridge are Gwendoline Christie (Game of Thrones) as the literal devil Lucifer Morningstar; Boyd Holbrook (Logan) as the nightmare the Corinthian; Charles Dance (Game of Thrones) as Roderick Burgess, a human magician; and Sanjeev Bhaskar (Yesterday) and Asim Chaudhry (Black Mirror: Bandersnatch) as Cain and Abel, respectively. Also Kirby Howell-Baptiste (Killing Eve) as Death of the Endless, Jenna Coleman (Doctor Who) as Johanna Constantine, David Thewlis (Wonder Woman) as John Dee/Doctor Destiny, Stephen Fry (V for Vendetta) as Gilbert, and Patton Oswalt (Agents of SHIELD) as the voice of Matthew the Raven.

Along with the teaser came three cast posters featuring the main trio:
