Nightwing #87 plays out as one continuous, spectacular image

Check out a five-page preview of December’s issue

Susana Polo is an entertainment editor at Polygon, specializing in pop culture and genre fare, with a primary expertise in comic books. Previously, she founded The Mary Sue.

The creative team behind DC Comics’ Nightwing series has a visual treat for fans this holiday season. You’ve heard of connecting covers? Well, Nightwing #87 will have 22 connecting pages. The entire issue will be a series of double-page splashes that connect as one single very, very, very wide image.

Tom Taylor and Bruno Redondo have played around with precise-but-dynamic layouts from their first issue on the series, with Redondo making liberal use of multiple “ghost” images of Nightwing to illustrate the character’s acrobatics. And as you can see in the seven unfinished pages of Nightwing #87 below (one single page and three double page spreads) — courtesy of DC Comics — Redondo is using every tool at his disposal for this issue.

DC Comics also shared the official summary for the issue:

This special Nightwing issue is ONE CONTINUOUS IMAGE! That’s right—if you placed every page next to each other, you’ll have one poster image with this story! Now that billionaire Dick Grayson has publicly dedicated his funds to save Blüdhaven, he’s a wanted man—and that’s why he finds hired killers breaking in to steal his dog, Haley!

Nightwing #87 will hit shelves on Dec. 21, and feature two variant covers, from Redondo (details of his costume design for Nightwing) and Jamal Campbell, which you can check out below:
