The PlayStation Classic console, Sony’s attempt at capturing the success of Nintendo’s own retro mini consoles, seemed to miss the mark. Prices have steadily declined since its December 2018 release, and is now down to just $39.99 at Walmart. That’s $60 off launch price of $99.99.
The game lineup on Sony’s retro console includes a few true classics from the original PlayStation era like Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy 7, and the original Resident Evil. Still, as Sony continues to remaster favorite PSone titles, it seems to have skimped on the PlayStation Classic game selection. The console is pretty easy to hack, though, if the mediocre list is your main concern.
The PlayStation Classic comes with two wired controllers, but you can use 8BitDo’s wireless adapter to connect DualShock gamepads (or any other Bluetooth controllers) to the system. The adapter also works on Nintendo Switch and PC.
If you were initially curious about the PlayStation Classic but were put off by disappointing reviews, this might be a good time to pick it up. Though we expect prices to continue to drop as retailers try to offload units.
