If you missed the Black Friday deal on Sega’s excellent plug-and-play retro console, you’re in luck. As of Monday, the Sega Genesis Mini is back down to $49.99 at Best Buy and Amazon. That’s $30 off the console, matching last year’s Black Friday discount.
The Sega Genesis Mini was a late addition to the retro mini console scene, but it more than holds its own next to Nintendo’s beloved NES Classic and SNES Classic. And while Nintendo consoles could be hard to find in stock even before the COVID-19 pandemic interrupted supply chains, the Sega Genesis Mini is much easier to come by. (Right now it’s available at Best Buy, while Amazon indicates that it will have more in stock on May 28.)
When the Sega Genesis Mini launched, we called it “a best-in-class retro console with excellent games, excellent emulation, original controllers, and a price tag that seems fair.” Now that price tag is $30 lower, which, while not the lowest price we’ve seen on the Sega Genesis Mini, is still a very good deal for a very good console.
Within the 42 games included with the Sega Genesis Mini, there are plenty of classics like Sonic the Hedgehog and Streets of Rage 2, as well as some deep cuts like Mega Man: The Wily Wars. In our review, Chris Grant specifically wanted to highlight “two undersung classics from some of gaming’s biggest properties that, despite being excellent entries in their respective canon, didn’t get the same attention as their Super NES-based counterparts: Castlevania: Bloodlines and Contra: Hard Corps.” Needless to say, there’s plenty of titles to dig into, whether you’re a long-standing Sega fan or are just looking for a new quarantine console and can’t find a Switch in stock.
