Death Stranding guide: Eastern Region memory chip locations

Find all the memory chips in Death Stranding’s first area

Death Stranding equations Kojima Productions/Sony Interactive Entertainment
Ryan Gilliam (he/him) has worked at Polygon for nearly seven years. He primarily spends his time writing guides for massively popular games like Diablo 4 & Destiny 2.

The world of Death Stranding is vast, and you’ll feel every foot of it as you deliver packages across the Eastern Region. Hidden among rocks, behind buildings, and on roofs, you’ll find memory chip collectibles. Occasionally, these items may give you bonus blueprints for items, but they’ll always add a bit of story (including some strange bios of real-life movies and music).

To find them, you’ll need to get close and use your scanner. Thankfully, their icon is easy to spot once you’re within range.

However, just because you see a memory chip on our map doesn’t mean you’ll see one in your game. For example, memory chip 43 won’t spawn until you get the “A Weird Glowing Object in Capital Knot City” email from Nick Easton. If you go to one of these locations and can’t find the card, don’t fret. Just bookmark this page, and come back to it a bit later — after you’ve leveled up some relations and progressed in the main story.

Here are all Death Stranding memory chips locations in the Eastern Region.

When you get near one of these locations, use your scanner to look for an oval shape denoting the memory chip. If you’re unsure what the shape looks like, scroll through some of the galleries below.

Memory chip 1

Memory chip 1 is nearly unmissable, and the game seems to want you to find it.

Go to the Waypoint West of Capital Knot City, one of the first locations the game sends you to. Enter the building and turn around. Walk right, circling around the base until you’re south of it on the map. You’ll find the memory chip sitting on the ground, near some rocks.

Pick it up, and carry it back to any base terminal to decode it.

Memory chip 2

Memory chip 2 is almost as easy to find as the first one. When the game sends you to the Wind Farm, hang out by the main base before you leave. Orient yourself so that you’re looking toward the forest, and turn to your right until you see an orange drum. There’s a small walkway behind the drum, and that’s where you’ll find memory chip 2.

Memory chip 15

Memory chip 15 is all the way in Port Knot City. Walk into the city, head past the base, and keep to your right. You’ll see a large group of storage containers stacked in a step-like fashion. Use your scanner, and you’ll see the memory chip hanging out on one of the containers. Climb your way up to it.

Memory chip 18

Memory chip 18 is in the first MULE area to the south of the Distribution Center West of Capital Knot City. Climb up into the mountains, and look for a cave — it’s east of the MULE camp. Inside the cave, there’s a small rock bluff hanging over the path. The memory chip is on that bluff.

Memory chip 41

Memory chip 41 is just outside of Port Knot City. If you’re walking out of Port Knot, turn right and you’ll see some washed up storage containers. Walk toward them, use your scan, and you’ll find the memory chip sitting on the ground.

Memory chip 42

Memory chip 42 is at the incinerator you visited early in the game — where you faced the BTs for the first time. Climb up on the roof, and you’ll see the memory chip sitting on the back right corner.

Memory chip 43

Memory chip 43 won’t spawn until you get the “A Weird Glowing Object in Capital Knot City” email from Nick Easton.

Once it’s in your game, grab a ladder, walk into Capital Knot City, and head past the base. Walk through the alleys until you reach a bunch of “do not enter” barriers. On the left side of the city, by the water, you can scan to find the memory chip on the roof of a two-story building. Set up a ladder, climb up, and grab the memory chip.

Memory chip 45

Find the Musician to the west of The Distribution Center West of Capital Knot City. Head north from there, and you’ll find a rock bridge over a chasm. Go under the bridge, and you’ll find the memory chip sitting on a rock.

Memory chip 49

On the very linear path between the Distribution Center West of Capital Knot City and the Wind Farm, you’ll come across this memory chip just sitting on a rock. If you’re going from the distribution center, look for the wind generators. When you can see them over the hill, you’re almost there. Walk just post the postbox, and scan if you’re having trouble finding it.
