Jeffrey Parkin (he/him) has been writing video game guides for Polygon for almost seven years. He has learned to love just about every genre of game that exists.

You can customize a lot in Death Stranding, but you’ll have to put in some work. In this vehicle customization guide, we’ll show you how to unlock new colors and get a new paint job.

Unlocking vehicle customization

You’ll unlock the ability to change vehicle colors during Episode 3. When you get the Distribution Center South of Lake Knot City up to at least a 3-star connection level (by completing deliveries there), you’ll receive your first eight color options.

You’ll receive additional paint colors for each additional star level of connection at the Distribution Center South of Lake Knot City. You’ll also receive one more color from the Chiral Artist’s Studio when you get it to a level 4 connection.

Vehicle customization options

Each vehicle has a main and sub color scheme.

To change a vehicle’s color scheme, the vehicle must be associated with a facility’s garage. So you’ll only be able to do this at facilities like cities, distribution centers, or safehouses. You can change the color of vehicles parked on an elevator or vehicles you’ve retrieved from the garage’s storage.

Once you’ve unlocked other color options (see above), hit the Triangle button to choose the vehicle’s main and sub color.
