Head to the Tower for some exotics

Destiny 2 Xur Bungie/Activision
Ryan Gilliam (he/him) has worked at Polygon for nearly seven years. He primarily spends his time writing guides for massively popular games like Diablo 4 & Destiny 2.

If you played Destiny, you may be familiar with Xur, the weekly exotic item merchant. In Destiny 2, he’s back, and he can now appear all over the map. This week, he’s in the Tower Hangar, and there’s a helpful icon on the planet map to show you where he is.

Bungie/Activision

Xur’s inventory this week consists of the following:

  • DARCI, sniper rifle: 29 Legendary Shards
  • Celestial Nighthawk, Hunter helmet: 23 Legendary Shards
  • Hallowfire Heart, Titan chest: 23 Legendary Shards
  • Eye of another World, Warlock helmet: 23 Legendary Shards
  • Fated Engram: 97 Legendary Shards
  • Three of Coins: 31 Legendary Shards

Each of the items comes at a maximum power level of 305 — a base power of 300, plus a Legendary (purple) mod that raises the value by five. This scales to your character’s power level, so make sure you’re buying Xur exotics on your highest level character.

DARCI

This is a pretty bad exotic. Its weapon archetype is fast firing, which means the damage per shot is very low. The exotic perk on DARCI is Personal Assistant, which causes the gun to highlight critical information about the target when aimed down the site. While this bonus is active, DARCI will have better lock on and deal more precision damage. While thematically cool, the bonus doesn’t do enough damage to be worthwhile. If you’re trying to finish up your collection, maybe take a look at this thing. Otherwise, skip DARCI.

Celestial Nighthawk

This is one of the best exotics in the game. Its main perk, Hawkeye Hack, causes Golden Gun to fire only one shot instead of three. However, this single shot does about six times the damage of the average Golden Gun. Players who love raiding or PvE in general need to pick this thing up. It’s exceptional for boss damage.

Hallowfire Heart

This is a pretty situational exotic. The main perk is Sunfire Furnace, which improves the recharge rate of your abilities when Hammer of Sol is charged. This exotic forces you to play Sunbreaker, which still isn’t nearly as useful as Striker or Sentinel in any activity. Additionally, this chest will only benefit you when you are holding onto your Super and not using it. This is useful in rare situations like during certain Nightfall modifiers, but otherwise pretty underwhelming.

Eye of Another World

You may already have Eye of Another World if you selected it from Sloane right before the Utopia campaign mission. The Cerebral Uplink perk will highlight targets for you and passively increase the regeneration of your grenade, melee and Rift abilities.

Fated Engram

The Fated Engram is new as of the Dec. 12 update. Buying one may be expensive, but it guarantees you an exotic that you don’t have. If you find yourself drowning in Legendary Shards and missing a few key Exotics, this is a pretty great way to spend your Shards. You can only get one per account, once a week.

Three of Coins

This old farming buff has returned from the Destiny graveyard to help you farm exotics. Also new as of Dec. 12, Three of Coins is a four-hour buff that increases the odds of Exotic engrams dropping for you in the wild. Their effectiveness in Destiny 2 is currently unclear.
